Halloween is a time when the vampire fangs come out in full force. However, for orthodontic patients – certain sweet treats can bite back. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) has teamed up with Pam Waterman, author of The Braces Cookbook, to bring orthodontic-friendly recipes and treats to trick-or-treaters and their parents. It’s no trick – these recipes are fun to make, fun to eat, and they won’t put a dent in the smiles of the nearly five million orthodontic patients currently in North America who wear braces, clear aligners or other orthodontic appliances to help them achieve a healthy, beautiful smile.
Halloween tends to be one of the busiest times of the year at orthodontists’ offices, primarily because patients indulge in treats that they should not be eating. Candies and other treats that are hard, chewy, sticky or crunchy can cause damage to braces, clear aligners and other orthodontic appliances. In addition to patient discomfort, a broken bracket or loose wire may prolong treatment and require additional orthodontic appointments. As part of October’s National Orthodontic Health Month, the AAO is providing orthodontic-friendly Halloween recipes and tips to help patients and their families enjoy the holiday.
“Halloween should be a fun time for all kids – including those in orthodontic treatment,” says Dr. Lee W. Graber, orthodontist and president of the American Association of Orthodontists. “We’re pleased to team up with Pam Waterman, author of the Braces Cookbooks, and offer tips and recipes that will help keep braces intact and patients satisfied this Halloween season.”
Featured Halloween recipes include Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Softies and Black Cherry Fruit Bats - a complete list of orthodontic-friendly recipes are at the AAO’s Web site, braces.org.
“The recipes we’ve developed are delicious and allow orthodontic patients, like my son, to enjoy the holiday without causing harm to their braces,” says author Pam Waterman. “Plus, they are fun to make together.”
What kinds of Halloween treats are “orthodontic-friendly”?
The good news is that there are plenty of food options for orthodontic patients – and with a little creativity, orthodontic patients can still enjoy Halloween treats. In general, orthodontic patients should look for softer treats, such as soft chocolate or peanut butter cups, or melt-in-your-mouth foods. Those with braces or retainers should avoid any foods that are sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy. The AAO recommends patients avoid the following Halloween treats, or recipes with these ingredients:
• Caramel
• Nuts
• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Taco chips
• Ice
Is it okay for orthodontic patients to eat sweets?
A few sweets can be okay occasionally, if the patient remembers to brush and floss afterwards. Orthodontic patients need to pay special attention to keeping braces or other orthodontic appliances clean, as well as teeth and gums. Orthodontists can advise patients on how best to brush and floss between teeth, around brackets and at the gum line. Dr. Graber reminds patients that if they follow their orthodontist’s recommendations, practice good oral hygiene, and are careful about the foods they eat, they should be able to finish treatment on time and with good results.
What should orthodontic patients do if food damages their braces?
If a patient chews on the wrong type of treat and damage occurs, they should call their orthodontist so that arrangements can be made to correct the problem. Typically, small problems can be solved over the phone. Loose brackets or wires can usually be made more comfortable by applying some orthodontic wax until the patient can come into the office.
Who is an orthodontist?
When it comes to getting a healthy straight smile, education is key. Orthodontists receive an additional two-to-three years of specialized education beyond dental school to learn the proper way to align and straighten teeth. As experts in creating healthy, beautiful smiles, orthodontists have the education, experience and expertise to recommend the best treatment option.
For orthodontic-friendly recipes and tips, visit www.braces.org. Additional tips and information can be found on the AAO’s Facebook, Twitter (@Braces) and YouTube pages. To locate an orthodontist, click on “Find an Orthodontist” or ask your dentist for a referral.
About the American Association of Orthodontists
The AAO comprises 16,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad. Founded in 1900, the AAO supports research and education leading to quality patient care and promotes increased public awareness of the need for and benefits of orthodontic treatment. Orthodontists are uniquely qualified to correct improperly aligned teeth and jaws. They are specialists in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Orthodontists receive two to three years of specialized education beyond dental school to learn the proper way to align and straighten teeth. Only those with this education may call themselves “orthodontists,” and only orthodontists may be members of the AAO.

A Time to Give Thanks
By State Sen. Greg Goggans
As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches it brings with it a wonderful time for us all to reflect on what is truly important and meaningful in life. On this very significant day, with origins tracing back to our country’s earliest history, we have the privilege of gathering with family and friends and celebrating the things that no economic downturn or recession can take away from us: the true riches of love, friendship, faith, and pride in being an American and a Georgian.
We must also take time to celebrate and give thanks to the freedoms we come to enjoy each and every day. That freedom was not free, and continues to be paid for by the sacrifices of our brave men and women serving our nation in the armed forces. They, and the countless number of military officers before them, have served and given their lives so America can continue to be the constant symbol of hope and freedom in an ever-changing world. We must constantly be thankful for their service to our nation.
Many families will not have a chance to see their loved ones gathered around the table or watching football because they are overseas keeping us safe and ensuring our way of life continues. Those military families need our thanks as well, as they provide daily love and support to those in the line of duty.
Amid all the economic uncertainty and frustration these last several years have brought, never forget the true riches of life: the loved ones who make Thanksgiving truly special. Take a moment to be thankful for your loved ones, the people who have been placed in your lives and make a lasting impact each and every day. These wonderful blessings are things we can all be thankful for this year, and every year.
Again, I wish you and your family a safe and joyous Thanksgiving holiday. Please remember to contact me in my office on the issues that are affecting you and your area. I am here to represent you and it is an honor for me to work on your behalf. As always, I’d like to thank members of the Senate staff, who contribute regularly to my column.

DOUGLAS, GA (November 8, 2010) – State Sen. Greg Goggans (R- Douglas) will serve as the new Senate Republican Caucus Secretary for the 2011 General Assembly, one of the highest ranking positions in the chamber. Goggans was elected to this important leadership seat Friday by the State Senate Majority during the Republican caucus elections held in Macon.
“To create jobs and grow our economy, Georgia needs elected leaders who are steadfast in their conservative values and beliefs,” said Goggans. “I wholeheartedly believe the Senate leadership team is committed to a fiscally-responsible government, keeping taxes low, cutting waste, and empowering the private sector to create the long-term prosperity we desperately need right now. I am very honored to have been chosen by my fellow senators to this position. I look forward to working closely with all members of the General Assembly and our new governor to ensure Georgia is on the right path to success.”Caucus elections are traditionally held at the beginning of each term immediately following the general election. The new leadership team will take office once the legislative session convenes on January 11.

This update is long overdue, I am so sorry I have not posted sooner. My last appointment was at the end of June and by this appointment, I had completed wearing trays 1-26. Tray 26 was supposed to be my final tray; however, Dr. Fender had already warned me that I may need refinement trays to get my teeth to their ideal placement. I knew that I definitely had a few stubborn teeth that needed to move a little more. Dr. Goggans examined my teeth and said that he was very happy with my progress, but he did see some areas that need more correction. In order to get my refinement trays, we basically had to start from the beginning…impressions and all!
Michelle sanded off my attachments….yes I said sanded! She told me the sander may hurt a little because your teeth can be sensitive to the cool air and vibrations it gives off. Honestly, this part didn’t bother me at all. After she was done, I looked a little like I had been hit with a powder puff around my mouth. She was nice enough to let me rinse out my mouth and wipe my face before she continued. I must say that although I had become used to the feeling of the attachments on my teeth, I did not miss them when they were gone.
Next, she filed down the ridges a little on my front teeth. They will probably do this again a little when I am completely done with treatment. We then moved on to my absolute least favorite part, IMPRESSIONS!! I don’t know what exactly makes that part so bad, but I’m not a fan of the process. However, they are now using some new kind of “goop” to do the impressions, and I found that it really was not quite as bad as I remembered it being the first time.

So where am I now? The picture on the right gives you some idea of how much my teeth have moved! Now, I’m waiting for my refinement trays to come in, which could be up to six weeks. In the mean time, I am to wear tray 26 until my new aligners arrive. It is definitely different wearing the trays without the attachments, sometimes I feel like I have to hold them down for a minute before they are on my teeth really well. I cannot believe how fast the treatment process has gone by and how much my teeth have already moved. I am not sure how many trays will make up the refinement set, but I think that will fly by too and I can’t wait for that perfect smile.

This is a center shot of my teeth before I started Invisalign.

This is what they look like now!

Ok it’s been a while, I just started tray 23 this morning. Surprisingly, it has not been too tight today; it really only hurt a little when I took them out for lunch. I have three more trays to go, which I am so excited about. The time has flown by!
At my last appointment, Dr. Fender told me he was very happy with my progress, and he thought we would definitely reach the desired look. However, we may have to do what Dr. Fender referred to as a refinement period. Basically, this just means they may make new impressions of my teeth and order some more trays. I’m not sure exactly how many it will be. I am getting ready to be finished, not because it’s been a bad process, but I’m just ready to see the end result. I was looking back over my first pictures and I can’t get over how much my teeth have moved.

I was looking at some other people’s blogs as well to see what they had experienced. Most everyone has said they were very happy they chose Invisalign, and said their teeth were moving so well. I really haven’t read anything negative about the treatment.
There have been a few times that I have gone to sleep with my trays out, and putting them in the next morning was no fun! Oh, and one day I decided that I would chew a piece of gum and I just didn’t think about taking my trays out! That was a major mess to have to clean. As long as you wear them like you are supposed to, you don’t really have much trouble. Okay well that’s all for now I’ll write more soon………Candace

More than half a million patients can boast experience with Invisalign treatment. While this invisible method of moving teeth is proven to be effective, many would-be candidates for Invisalign treatment have confusion about whether it’s right for them. Here are some common questions and concerns about Invisalign, with straight answers.
Have you been told that Invisalign won’t fix your bite?
There are certain movements that are more successful with Invisalign than with braces – it just depends on the type of bite that you have. Invisalign statistics show that over 80% of bad bites (malocclusions) can be corrected by Invisalign. The other 20% can be corrected in conjunction with Invisalign by using braces that are hidden behind the teeth.
Are you worried that Invisalign is expensive?
The cost of Invisalign in most cases is comparable to traditional orthodontics. We do offer affordable financing options with low monthly payments. If it’s important to you to have straight teeth and a more confident smile, we will help make Invisalign affordable for you.
Have you heard that Invisalign doesn’t work?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that requires special technique and product knowledge. Our office is well trained in this system and we have successfully treated a broad range of patient types.
Are you concerned about your speech being affected?
Most patients will not notice a significant change in their speech. Certain patients may take a couple of days to a couple of weeks to become accustomed to their aligners. The tongue typically adapts more quickly in patients who speak two languages.
Have you heard that you can’t drink liquids with Invisalign?
You can certainly drink liquids while you’re in treatment. However, we recommend that when you do, you take the time to brush your teeth and clean your aligners afterward. If you’re away from home and don’t have access to your toothbrush, it’s best to rinse your aligners with water when your drink is finished. You can drink coffee and tea, but stay away from drinks that are too hot and drinks heavy in sugar.
Have you been told in the past you are not a candidate for Invisalign treatment?
Come in for a free consultation. We have treated a wide variety of Invisalign cases and are comfortable with the technique. Most likely we can show you an example of a case similar to yours that we have treated successfully.
Check out these real-life cases that Dr. Fender and Dr. Goggans have treated with Invisalign.
