State Senator Recognized for Leadership and Commitment to Health Issues

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Goggans Named “Public Health Hero”

dr-greg-goggansDOUGLAS, GA (Jan. 4, 2010) – State Sen. Greg Goggans (R-Douglas) has been honored as a “Public Health Hero” by the Georgia Public Health Association (GPHA). The recognition was announced by the GPHA at its December business meeting at the Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon.

GPHA President Russ Toal commended Sen. Goggans for his leadership on health issues during his tenure in the legislature.

“Greg Goggans devotes a great deal of time and effort to understanding the implications of maintaining a healthy state population,” Toal said. “His thoughtful and pragmatic approach balances the long-term consequences of the public’s overall health with the difficult budgetary constraints our state faces. We are pleased to recognize his outstanding leadership on public health issues at the Capitol.”

Goggans has devoted much of his legislative career to improving health services in Georgia.  He has lead initiatives to create a statewide trauma care network and in 2009 he helped restructure Georgia’s Department of Human Resources (DHR) which oversees the state’s public and mental health departments.  Goggans’ work helped create a streamlined organizational structure that can utilize DHR resources more efficiently for its public health programs.

Goggans was first elected to the Georgia State Senate from the 7th District in 2004. He represents the citizens of Atkins, Bacon, Berrien, Clinch, Coffee, Echols, Lanier, Pierce, and Ware counties and portions of Cook County.  Goggans is currently serving as Secretary of the Health and Human Services committee. He also serves on the Appropriations, Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, Finance, and Transportation committees.

GPHA’s mission is to advocate for conditions in which all people and communities can be healthy; to promote the scientific foundation of public health practice and policy; and to assure a continuous voice broadly representing public health in Georgia.

Fender-Goggans Orthodontics Heads Up Partners in Education

Monday, January 4th, 2010

img_13322South, GA (Douglas, Tifton, Baxley)- Dec. 17, 2009- South, GA orthodontists putting $100,000 into local school systems. Fender-Goggans Orthodontics continues contributions to local communities focusing primarily on education in 2010.

Fender-Goggans Orthodontics is excited to be launching their new program Partners in Education, beginning January 2010. Dr. Fender and Dr. Goggans, orthodontists serving Douglas, Tifton, Baxley, and surrounding counties, understand and emphasize the importance of good education. “As a professional and father of three boys, I understand not only the importance, but the necessity of education in today’s society,” says Dr. Fender.

As a state senator, Dr. Goggans believes, “We can all agree that this has been an extraordinary year where Georgians have experienced historical economic difficulties. Georgia is not alone as the entire country is in the grips of this economic tsunami. The State of Georgia has experienced a double digit decline in its revenues ten out of the last eleven months. Because of this, the State of Georgia has had to severely cut its budget.”

With this in mind Dr. Fender, Dr. Goggans, and their entire team have committed to donating $100,000 into local school systems with the launch of Partners in Education. For each patient that begins treatment in the year 2010, Fender-Goggans Orthodontics will donate $100 in their name to the school of their choice up to $100,000.

“Georgia is blessed to have many precious resources, but none are as valuable or as important as our children, and much of their success hinges on education,” states Dr. Goggans. As a team, they recognize that the future success of our state lies with our children and that investing in their future is essential. Fender-Goggans Orthodontics is 100% committed to giving back to the local communities and is proud to initiate the Partners in Education Program.

Family Physicians Name Goggans Top Lawmaker

Friday, December 4th, 2009

State Senator honored as “Family Medicine Legislative Champion of the Year”
ATLANTA (December 4, 2009) – Sen. Greg Goggans (R-Douglas) has been chosen as the 2009 Family Medicine Legislative Champion of the Year by the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians (GAFP).  Goggans received the award at the GAFP Presidential Gala and Awards Banquet at the Cobb Galleria Convention Center last month.

“It is extremely humbling to be recognized by a group that I have the respect and gratitude for as I do for Georgia’s family physicians,” said Goggans.  “Our state is extremely fortunate to have these dedicated, hard-working men and women providing the best-possible care for our families and loved ones.  I will continue to work hand-in-hand with our medical community and ensure doctors around the state have the resources and support they need to give their patients access to the highest-quality healthcare.”

The GAFP Family Medicine Legislative Champion of the Year Award is given to a lawmaker who demonstrates distinguished leadership and an unceasing commitment to assist family physicians and their patients in Georgia.  This is done in conjunction with other educational efforts aimed at promoting premier practices to family physicians in Georgia and the Southeast.

Goggans was chosen by the GAFP Legislative Committee because of his strong commitment to family medicine.

“Sen. Goggans has been a strong supporter of family medicine and our patients.  He also understands the importance and the need for all Georgians having access to health care.  Coming from Douglas, he is keenly aware of the need for support for those physicians practicing in a rural community,” said 2009 GAFP President, Dr. Howard McMahan.

Established in 1947, GAFP is a member chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, representing family physicians throughout the state of Georgia.  GAFP strives to promote the specialty of family medicine through the education of and service to family physicians in Georgia.
