Candace’s Invisalign Journey In the Last Stages

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

This update is long overdue, I am so sorry I have not posted sooner. My last appointment was at the end of June and by this appointment, I had completed wearing trays 1-26. Tray 26 was supposed to be my final tray; however, Dr. Fender had already warned me that I may need refinement trays to get my teeth to their ideal placement. I knew that I definitely had a few stubborn teeth that needed to move a little more. Dr. Goggans examined my teeth and said that he was very happy with my progress, but he did see some areas that need more correction. In order to get my refinement trays, we basically had to start from the beginning…impressions and all!

Michelle sanded off my attachments….yes I said sanded! She told me the sander may hurt a little because your teeth can be sensitive to the cool air and vibrations it gives off. Honestly, this part didn’t bother me at all. After she was done, I looked a little like I had been hit with a powder puff around my mouth. She was nice enough to let me rinse out my mouth and wipe my face before she continued. I must say that although I had become used to the feeling of the attachments on my teeth, I did not miss them when they were gone.

Next, she filed down the ridges a little on my front teeth. They will probably do this again a little when I am completely done with treatment. We then moved on to my absolute least favorite part, IMPRESSIONS!! I don’t know what exactly makes that part so bad, but I’m not a fan of the process. However, they are now using some new kind of “goop” to do the impressions, and I found that it really was not quite as bad as I remembered it being the first time.buccal-before1

So where am I now? The picture on the right gives you some idea of how much my teeth have moved! Now, I’m waiting for my refinement trays to come in, which could be up to six weeks. In the mean time, I am to wear tray 26 until my new aligners arrive. It is definitely different wearing the trays without the attachments, sometimes I feel like I have to hold them down for a minute before they are on my teeth really well.  I cannot believe how fast the treatment process has gone by and how much my teeth have already moved. I am not sure how many trays will make up the refinement set, but I think that will fly by too and I can’t wait for that perfect smile.

Invisalign Questions Answered

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

More than half a million patients can boast experience with Invisalign treatment. While this invisible method of moving teeth is proven to be effective, many would-be candidates for Invisalign treatment have confusion about whether it’s right for them. Here are some common questions and concerns about Invisalign, with straight answers.

Have you been told that Invisalign won’t fix your bite?
There are certain movements that are more successful with Invisalign than with braces – it just depends on the type of bite that you have. Invisalign statistics show that over 80% of bad bites (malocclusions) can be corrected by Invisalign. The other 20% can be corrected in conjunction with Invisalign by using braces that are hidden behind the teeth.

Are you worried that Invisalign is expensive?
The cost of Invisalign in most cases is comparable to traditional orthodontics. We do offer affordable financing options with low monthly payments.  If it’s important to you to have straight teeth and a more confident smile, we will help make Invisalign affordable for you.

Have you heard that Invisalign doesn’t work?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that requires special technique and product knowledge. Our office is well trained in this system and we have successfully treated a broad range of patient types.

Are you concerned about your speech being affected?
Most patients will not notice a significant change in their speech. Certain patients may take a couple of days to a couple of weeks to become accustomed to their aligners. The tongue typically adapts more quickly in patients who speak two languages.

Have you heard that you can’t drink liquids with Invisalign?
You can certainly drink liquids while you’re in treatment. However, we recommend that when you do, you take the time to brush your teeth and clean your aligners afterward. If you’re away from home and don’t have access to your toothbrush, it’s best to rinse your aligners with water when your drink is finished. You can drink coffee and tea, but stay away from drinks that are too hot and drinks heavy in sugar.

Have you been told in the past you are not a candidate for Invisalign treatment?
Come in for a free consultation. We have treated a wide variety of Invisalign cases and are comfortable with the technique. Most likely we can show you an example of a case similar to yours that we have treated successfully.

Check out these real-life cases that Dr. Fender and Dr. Goggans have treated with Invisalign.

Fifth appointment- Tray 15

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Hi everyone-

I had another appointment today and moved to tray 15. My visit went very well. None of my appointments have taken very long, so it’s not inconvenient. Today instead of filing between my teeth with the thin metal strip they usually use, Dr. Fender used a small “dental power tool”.  :) Basically it files the teeth just a little more than the metal file to create more space so my teeth can move. Dr. Fender said that it does not damage my teeth at all to do this filing. It felt really weird but it didn’t really hurt. Dr. Fender also said he was very happy with my progress which is very encouraging to me. I like to know that everything is working like it is supposed to.

Next Day

Yesterday was the first day with tray fifteen. I definitely felt pressure from the trays. When I woke up this morning, my mouth was a little sore, but by the afternoon they didn’t really bother me much. I also noticed when I woke up that my teeth had shifted. I can mostly feel it in my bite, but it’s really becoming noticeable now which is very exciting to me. More later.

Fender-Goggans Orthodontics Heads Up Partners in Education

Monday, January 4th, 2010

img_13322South, GA (Douglas, Tifton, Baxley)- Dec. 17, 2009- South, GA orthodontists putting $100,000 into local school systems. Fender-Goggans Orthodontics continues contributions to local communities focusing primarily on education in 2010.

Fender-Goggans Orthodontics is excited to be launching their new program Partners in Education, beginning January 2010. Dr. Fender and Dr. Goggans, orthodontists serving Douglas, Tifton, Baxley, and surrounding counties, understand and emphasize the importance of good education. “As a professional and father of three boys, I understand not only the importance, but the necessity of education in today’s society,” says Dr. Fender.

As a state senator, Dr. Goggans believes, “We can all agree that this has been an extraordinary year where Georgians have experienced historical economic difficulties. Georgia is not alone as the entire country is in the grips of this economic tsunami. The State of Georgia has experienced a double digit decline in its revenues ten out of the last eleven months. Because of this, the State of Georgia has had to severely cut its budget.”

With this in mind Dr. Fender, Dr. Goggans, and their entire team have committed to donating $100,000 into local school systems with the launch of Partners in Education. For each patient that begins treatment in the year 2010, Fender-Goggans Orthodontics will donate $100 in their name to the school of their choice up to $100,000.

“Georgia is blessed to have many precious resources, but none are as valuable or as important as our children, and much of their success hinges on education,” states Dr. Goggans. As a team, they recognize that the future success of our state lies with our children and that investing in their future is essential. Fender-Goggans Orthodontics is 100% committed to giving back to the local communities and is proud to initiate the Partners in Education Program.

Halfway through Invisalign Treatment

Monday, December 21st, 2009

candaces-checkup-sept

I am now on tray 13…I’m not gonna lie the first day or so was not my favorite but its better now. I was looking in the mirror this morning, and I am definitely beginning to see some changes, mostly on my bottom teeth. At my last appointment, Dr. Goggans said everything was looking like it was supposed to. Invisalign has been so simple. It made my wedding day easier as well. I just popped them out for the wedding and pictures, and they went back in later!

I usually like to soak them in peroxide water for just a bit while I’m eating…that seems to keep them good and clear. If I don’t have that handy, I try to keep a toothbrush and toothpaste with me when I’m out so that my mouth will feel clean after I eat.

It still amazes me that people don’t even notice that I have them. Not that I’m complaining :) It’s great!! I just realized that tray 13 means I am halfway through my treatment!!! That’s so exciting…it has gone by pretty quickly.  I am ready to see the end results!!

Check back later for more updates :)
