Invisalign Questions Answered
Thursday, April 29th, 2010
More than half a million patients can boast experience with Invisalign treatment. While this invisible method of moving teeth is proven to be effective, many would-be candidates for Invisalign treatment have confusion about whether it’s right for them. Here are some common questions and concerns about Invisalign, with straight answers.
Have you been told that Invisalign won’t fix your bite?
There are certain movements that are more successful with Invisalign than with braces – it just depends on the type of bite that you have. Invisalign statistics show that over 80% of bad bites (malocclusions) can be corrected by Invisalign. The other 20% can be corrected in conjunction with Invisalign by using braces that are hidden behind the teeth.
Are you worried that Invisalign is expensive?
The cost of Invisalign in most cases is comparable to traditional orthodontics. We do offer affordable financing options with low monthly payments. If it’s important to you to have straight teeth and a more confident smile, we will help make Invisalign affordable for you.
Have you heard that Invisalign doesn’t work?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that requires special technique and product knowledge. Our office is well trained in this system and we have successfully treated a broad range of patient types.
Are you concerned about your speech being affected?
Most patients will not notice a significant change in their speech. Certain patients may take a couple of days to a couple of weeks to become accustomed to their aligners. The tongue typically adapts more quickly in patients who speak two languages.
Have you heard that you can’t drink liquids with Invisalign?
You can certainly drink liquids while you’re in treatment. However, we recommend that when you do, you take the time to brush your teeth and clean your aligners afterward. If you’re away from home and don’t have access to your toothbrush, it’s best to rinse your aligners with water when your drink is finished. You can drink coffee and tea, but stay away from drinks that are too hot and drinks heavy in sugar.
Have you been told in the past you are not a candidate for Invisalign treatment?
Come in for a free consultation. We have treated a wide variety of Invisalign cases and are comfortable with the technique. Most likely we can show you an example of a case similar to yours that we have treated successfully.

3rd Appointment
Thursday, August 27th, 2009
Well I’m on my fifth set of Invisalign trays and everything is going great. I have become so used to taking them in and out. I have no problems with them at all. I am so glad that I went with the Invisalign option because I just became engaged! Can you imagine what braces would have looked like in my engagement/wedding pictures? I think I would have had to have put off the wedding until they came off!! So now I just have to wear these suckers all the time so I’ll have the perfect smile in time for my wedding.
 Me and my FIANCE James!
I also went in for my third appointment at Fender-Goggans Orthodontics recently and I’m on to my fifth set of trays. Time really flies. Dr. Goggans took a look at my teeth and told me that everything was progressing just as they should. So far, I cannot tell a major difference in my teeth. Jessica, the assistant, explained that tooth movement with Invisalign works from the back to the front of the mouth, so it doesn’t offer noticeable changes at first. But, I can tell that something is going on because with each new set of trays, there is a little bit of discomfort for the first day or so. I can also tell that my teeth are moving because when I don’t have the trays in and bite down, my teeth feel different.
Basically all we did at this last visit was check to make sure all of my attachments/buttons were still on good. They also filed a little in between my teeth to make sure they still have room to move. Apparently they can get too tight and just won’t move. So this file was just a small strip essentially its like a flexible metal that fit between my teeth. It didn’t hurt at all.

2nd Appointment
Monday, June 15th, 2009
After what feels like forever (really only 4 weeks), I went to my second appointment at Fender-Goggans Orthodontics to get my first set of Invisalign trays. While I was really excited, I was also a little nervous because I was unsure of how the would feel, would they hurt, etc. When I tried them on at the office, I have to admit that they were a little tighter than I had anticipated. Michelle, the friendly assistant, made sure they fit well and explained everything about the trays, like how to take the off and how to put them on. They also had to attach these things called buttons to my teeth. The trays fit over the buttons and holds it where it needs to be. The buttons are an extra tool that they use to straighten the teeth along with the Invisalign. Michelle said that some people needed them, and some didn’t.
Dr. Goggans making sure the trays fit correctly.
My first two sets of trays
Me with my first set of trays in!
Close up: Can you see them?
So after leaving the office with my new Invisalign trays (I also went home with 3 other sets which I will start wearing in two week intervals) I went home. For the next few days, I could definitely tell that I had something new in my mouth and was al little sore. The most challenging part so far is taking the trays off. It’s getting a little easier but I still have to stand in front of the mirror to get them off.
Although it has taken some adjusting getting used to them (I’m constantly biting down on them and running my tongue over them in my mouth) I am glad that I went with this option because no one can tell that you have them on. It’s also great that you can take them out to eat and don’t have to worry about food in your braces. So I’m on my first set, and I only have 25 more to go!
More soon!

Making the Phone Call
Monday, April 27th, 2009
Thanks for joining me on my Invisalign journey. I decided to blog about my treatment so that others would know what to except—and I wanted to give a firsthand account of the good and the bad of adult treatment.
First, I’ve always wanted to get my teeth straightened, but it was never an option for me as a child. I want to get braces because I’m not happy at all with my smile and I’m really self conscious of my teeth. That is especially frustrating to me considering I’m a pretty happy person and I smile all the time. So it’s really aggravating to feel like I need to hide my smile, the only thing I was worried about was how much they cost.
I decided to call my local orthodontic office, Fender-Goggans Orthodontics. I was surprised at how nice the person was that answered the phone. I really wanted to schedule an appointment but was worried how much the first appointment cost (I don’t have insurance). I was surprised to find out that the consultation was free and that included digital X-Rays. After they took all of my personal information the lady was able to answer my questions about different treatment options—I really wanted Invisalign and wasn’t sure if they would be right for me. She explained that I would have to wait until the doctor’s could look at my X-Rays to determine which treatment option would be the best one. I was also surprised at how quickly they were able to see me—I was expecting to have to wait a few weeks, but I made my appointment for the same week.
Stay tuned, I will blog again after my first appointment! Thanks for joining me on my journey.
